Preparing for Your Class Visit

Museum Tours

Admission Fees & Payment

  • Admission for a self-guided tour is $2 per person, or $5 per family.
  • Admission for docent lead tours with activities is $150 per class (25-30 students); chaperones are not required to pay for these tours.
  • Payment may be mailed or delivered upon confirmation.
  • Payment must be received at least two weeks before your scheduled field trip.

Reservation Information

  • Call or email a tour request and include your name, school, and number of students.
  • Allow at least one week for confirmation response by phone or email. If you do not receive a response within this time period, please email info@museumoflocalhistory.org.
  • We encourage you to visit the museum prior to your field trip to become familiar with the exhibits.

Chaperones

  • The Museum requires one adult per five students for grades K-6. Older student’s minimum is one adult per ten students.
  • Adults accompanying groups are responsible for supervising students at all times while your group visits the Museum gallery and enjoys lunch.
  • Please prepare chaperones/group leaders and students before you visit by reading the Museum policies and rules. Please silence all cell phones.

Pencil Policy

  • Pencils may be used with a clipboard or other writing surface.
  • Pens are not allowed in the gallery.
  • Return all Museum clipboards and pencils to the appropriate containers.

Self-Guided Tours

  • Teachers may ask students to visit the Museum with their parents and families as part of an assignment. We ask that you notify us if you choose this type of arrangement so we can be prepared for an increased number of visitors.

General Store

We have a few gift items and books for sale in our store. Children may “shop” in small groups of 4-5 after the program. Remind them to bring money if they want to shop.

School Field Trip Checklist

Before Your Field Trip

  • Confirm the date and time of your field trip and the number of students and chaperones who will attend.
  • Make payment to the museum at least two weeks before the field trip.
  • Make copies of and distribute the letter to the chaperones.
  • Divide students and parent volunteers into 2 equally sized groups. 

How to Cancel a Field Trip

Notify the Museum at least two weeks ahead of time if you need to cancel a field trip. Leave a message by phone or email the museum or the docent coordinator.

  • There is a $15 charge if you cancel
  • There is no fee charged for rescheduling

Provide the following information: School name, date of scheduled field trip, teacher name, teacher phone number.

On the Day of Your Field Trip

  • Review the field trip plan and the Museum Rules with your students.
  • Assemble at the front entrance where a Museum representative will greet you.

Museum Manners

Museums are places to have fun and see new things.

Use your imagination about what it was like living in Fremont, Newark, or Union City long ago.

Stay focused and listen to your teacher, chaperone, and/or museum guide.

Enjoy discovering new things.

Use precaution around the displays and touch only the items you are allowed to touch.

Museum visits are a time to respect your classmates, leaders, and other visitors in the museum.

Reminders

  • Museum items shouldn’t be touched unless a Museum volunteer says it’s OK or if a sign says “Touch Me”. Many of the items are fragile, and some can be dangerous.
  • No food or drinks are allowed inside the Museum. This includes water bottles, gum, and candy.
